SHIFT, an adjustable coffee table to elevate any living space
Designed to complement a range of spaces, this coffee table’s surface can be shaped by rotating its top layer. Evocative of the ever-changing Canadian landscape, SHIFT takes formal inspiration from the Canadian Museum of History designed by Douglas Cardinal. The hole acts as a center of rotation and a focal point that can interact with decorative items.

Design Inspiration
The Shift Table was inspired by the Canadian Museum of History, located in Canada’s capital and designed by architect Douglas Cardinal. The lines and forms of the architecture mimic the natural landscape of Canada as it shifts and changes over time. Inspiration was taken from the curved pillars, the overlapping organic forms within the structure, and the layers within the limestone brick walls.
The Prototype
As part of the design process, a full-scale model was made to test the features and develop the form. Made with maple-veneered plywood surfaces and solid maple legs to test with the intended materials.

A take on the tablecloth
A tie-on tablecloth creates a basket, modifying the function of the hole to hold a potted plant. The two-toned taffeta with a burnt orange and teal weave emulates the copper patina of the Canadia Museum of History roof.
